Active Blast – Daily Movement for Healthy, Happy Learners
What is Active Blast?
Active Blast is a 15–20 minute mid-afternoon movement session designed to get children up, active, and engaged. It’s a short, structured break from seated learning that boosts physical health, supports mental wellbeing, and re-energises children for the rest of the school day.
This initiative ensures that, in tandem with the one formal PE lesson per week, our children still receive the equivalent of 2 hours of physical activity across the week – helping us meet recommended activity guidelines and keeping movement a daily priority.
Why Mid-Afternoon?
The mid-afternoon slot is when energy levels often dip, attention can wander, and learning stamina starts to fade. By introducing Active Blast at this time, we:
Reawaken concentration through increased blood flow and oxygen to the brain.
Lift mood with the natural release of endorphins.
Break up sedentary time, which research shows improves overall health.
Foster positive routines that children can carry into home life.
What Does an Active Blast Look Like?
Each Active Blast session is quick, simple, and accessible for all children. Activities can be led by class teachers, teaching assistants, or even the children themselves. Examples include:
Fitness circuits – star jumps, squats, lunges
Dance and follow-along videos – Just Dance, BBC Super Movers
Outdoor active games – tag, relay races, hoop challenges
Mind-body sessions – yoga flows, stretching, balance activities
The key is variety and fun!
Benefits for Children
Active Blast isn’t just about exercise; it’s about building habits, resilience, and joy in movement. Regular participation can:
Improve fitness and co-ordination
Support emotional regulation and reduce stress
Encourage teamwork and communication skills
Boost focus and academic performance
Promote confidence in trying new physical challenges
Our Commitment
Active Blast reflects our belief that movement is a vital part of the school day, not an optional extra. By embedding it into our timetable, we ensure that every child – regardless of sporting ability – experiences the joy and benefits of being active, every single day.
As we launch this initiative, we’ll gather feedback from staff and children to keep sessions fresh, inclusive, and effective. Over time, we aim for Active Blast to become a cornerstone of our school culture – as natural and essential as break time or lunch.
