We have one Parent Governor vacancy on the Local Governing Committee at The Riverview Academy and we are inviting parents and carers to stand for election (or to nominate another parent or carer).
What is a Local Governing Committee?
Each school in The Golden Thread Alliance has a Local Governing Committee. The Committee focuses on what matters most for your child at this school: teaching, learning, behaviour, attendance and overall pupil experience.
What do Parent Governors do?
Parent Governors bring a parent or carer perspective to discussions by asking constructive questions about pupil outcomes, curriculum and inclusion. They help make sure the school’s plans are ambitious and effective and keep Governors connected to the wider parent community.
Before anyone can officially take up the role as a Governor, there are a few important checks and steps we must complete. These are to make sure that every adult working with our school community is suitable and properly prepared and the wellbeing of our pupils always comes first.
- Enhanced DBS check: This is a criminal record check which confirms that a person is safe to work with children.
- References: We ask for two references to give reassurance about the person’s character and suitability for the role; one must be your current employer.
- Safeguarding training: All new Governors must complete safeguarding training so they understand their responsibility to help keep children safe.
These steps are completed before a Governor is formally elected, to make sure the safety and wellbeing of our pupils always comes first.
Do I need any special qualifications?
No – what matters most is that you care about our school and its pupils, are willing to learn, listen and work as part of a team and can give some time to attend meetings and read papers. We welcome nominations from all parents and carers (aged 18+) from every background and community.

A short guide with typical time commitments is attached and you will be supported every step of the way.
How to apply
Please complete both the Nomination Form and the Governor Application form (both attached) and send them by 12 noon on Tuesday 5th May 2026 either:
- By e-mail to Sarah Richards, Governance Professional: governancelead@golden-thread.org or
- As a paper copy to the school office (marked for Sarah Richards attention)
You can nominate yourself. If you nominate someone else, please ask their permission first and make sure they also complete the two forms. If we receive more applications than places we will hold a secret ballot. All parents/carers will receive voting papers.
