Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
At Riverview, we understand how important communication is for every aspect of a child’s learning, wellbeing, and relationships. We are committed to supporting children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) through early identification, tailored support, and strong partnerships with families.
What is SLCN?
Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) is an umbrella term that covers a wide range of difficulties, including:
Trouble pronouncing certain sounds or words (speech sounds)
Delays in understanding spoken language (receptive language)
Difficulty expressing thoughts clearly or finding the right words (expressive language)
Challenges with using language in social situations (social communication)
Some children may have a specific diagnosis, such as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), while others may experience temporary delays or difficulties linked to other needs.
At Riverview, we know that early support makes a big difference.
Signs We May Notice at School
Every child is unique, but we may observe:
Difficulty following instructions
Limited vocabulary or short sentences for their age
Getting frustrated when trying to express themselves
Quietness or reluctance to speak in groups
Challenges taking turns in conversation or staying on topic
Mispronounced sounds that persist beyond expected age ranges
If we have concerns, we always speak to families sensitively and work together on the next steps.
How We Support Children with SLCN
We use a range of evidence-informed strategies to help children develop their communication skills, including:
Language-rich classrooms with visual aids, clear routines, and plenty of speaking and listening opportunities
Targeted small-group sessions to develop vocabulary, sentence structure, or social interaction
1:1 interventions with trained staff where needed
Use of Makaton signs, visual timetables, and/or communication boards
Access to specialist support, such as Speech and Language Therapists (SALT)
Individual targets set and reviewed regularly
Working with Families
We work closely with parents/carers to support children both at school and at home. This may include:
Referrals to NHS or private Speech and Language Therapy
Sharing strategies and activities to try at home
Joint reviews of progress and next steps
Liaising with Early Help, Health Visitors, or other professionals where appropriate
We know that consistency between home and school gives children the best chance to succeed.
Celebrating Communication in All Forms
Whether it’s through spoken words, signs, gestures, pictures, or play, we believe every child deserves to be heard. We celebrate all forms of communication and help children to become confident, curious learners with a voice of their own.
